Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), also known as Bio-identical hormone therapy (BHT) or natural hormone therapy, is the practice of using hormones, identical on a molecular level with human hormones, to correct hormone imbalance due to illness, disease, aging and environmental and dietary toxins.
Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance
Anxiety and depression
Decreased muscle strength
Inability to lose weight
Lack of energy and fatigue
Muscle and/or joint pain
Reduced mental clarity/focus
Sexual desire/performance issues
Almost all men and women over 40, and many over 30, have a hormone imbalance. Getting your levels checked should be an integral part of your yearly checkups. – Nishath Hakim, MD

Bio-Identical vs Synthetic Hormones
Dosage – With synthetic (conventional) hormones you are limited to the doses pharmaceutical companies offer. With bio-identical hormones, each dose is tailored to an individual’s specific needs, allowing for a more accurate treatment.
Side Effects – Synthetic hormones are not structurally the same as human hormones, which often leads to a variety of unwanted side effects including high blood pressure, blot clots and even cancer. On the contrary, because bio-identical hormones are an exact structural replica of endogenous hormones, side effects are rarely observed.
Effectiveness – While synthetic hormones can mimic the effects of natural human hormones in certain biological pathways, they rarely offer the same effectiveness because the body interprets them as foreign toxins, which it can’t properly metabolize. Bio-identical hormones have the exact same structure as human hormones; therefore they are equally as effective as the hormones we naturally produce in our bodies.
The body manufactures dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) naturally in the adrenal glands and is then converted to androgens, estrogens and other hormones. These are the hormones that regulate fat and mineral metabolism, sexual and reproductive function, and energy levels. DHEA supplementation has been used to improve:
Breakdown of fat
Immune system function
Estrogen is a sex hormone that gets a lot of attention in women's lives, but it is actually a hormone that affects both men and women. Estrogen is believed to protect against heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s Disease and memory disorders. Estrogen supplementation has been used to improve:
Wrinkles of the face
Melatonin is created by the pineal gland in the brain. In a normally functioning individual, melatonin directs our circadian rhythm by signaling relaxation and lower body temperature at night to induce and maintain sleep. Melatonin supplementation has been used to improve:
Quality of sleep
Progesterone is produced in the ovaries, the placenta and the adrenal glands. It helps a women get and stay pregnant, regulates the menstrual cycle and plays a role in sexual desire. It protects against uterine and breast cancers, osteoporosis and ovarian cysts. Progesterone supplementation can improve:
Abnormal uterine bleeding
Irregular menstrual cycle
Testosterone is secreted by the testes in males and in much smaller doses in the ovaries in females. In the right amounts, testosterone improves muscle mass, strength and brain function. However, low levels can decrease sex drive, increase fat storage and increase risk of cardiovascular disease. Supplementation can improve:
Ability to lose weight
Arthritis, cholesterol levels, risk of cardiovascular disease & hypertension
Thyroid Hormones - T4 & T3
The thyroid gland releases two thyroid hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones impact all organs of the body and regulate temperature, metabolism and cerebral function. For those with deficiencies in these hormones, supplementation can improve:
