Revolutionary Skin Resurfacing: PRP Microneedling FAQs
Answers to Patients’ Questions About PRP Microneedling
PRP microneedling has emerged as a revolutionary skin resurfacing treatment, garnering attention for its ability to improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of scars, minimize unwanted pigmentation, and promote a more youthful complexion. This innovative procedure – sometimes referred to in the media as a Vampire Facial® – combines the benefits of microneedling with the regenerative properties of platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
Because it is a 100% natural skin resurfacing treatment, holistic doctors like Dr. Nishath Hakim in Royal Oak are pleased to offer PRP microneedling treatment to their patients – for spectacular skin resurfacing without side-effects, surgery, or downtime.
In this article, Royal Oak natural medicine specialist Dr. Nishath Hakim answers our patients’ most commonly asked questions about PRP microneedling, shedding light on the science behind PRP and microneedling, collagen induction, safety considerations, and more.
What conditions can PRP microneedling treat?
PRP microneedling at Prosperity Health in Royal Oak is ideal for individuals who want to improve their skin texture, reduce scarring, minimize unwanted pigmentation (age spots, dark spots, sun spots), decrease fine lines and wrinkles, or address other signs of aging. PRP microneedling also helps improve the plumpness, elasticity and tightness of the skin to some extent by stimulating renewed production of collagen and elastin.
What is microneedling, and how does it rejuvenate skin?
Microneedling involves the use of a device with very tiny needles that creates controlled micro-injuries to the skin. These tiny “needle pricks” trick the skin into thinking it has been wounded, triggering the skin’s natural healing process, stimulating renewed collagen and elastin production – which improves skin texture and tone.
What exactly is PRP, and how does it work?
PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, which is derived from the liquid component of the patient’s own blood. PRP contains highly concentrated amounts of the body’s own natural growth factors that stimulate collagen production, induce cellular turnover, and promote skin healing.
During PRP microneedling at Prosperity Health in Royal Oak, a small amount of the patient’s own blood is drawn, and the liquid platelet rich plasma is separated from the solid blood cells. The PRP is then applied to the skin during the microneedling process. The tiny channels created in the skin by the ultrafine “micro-needles” enables the PRP’s growth factors to penetrate the deeper level of the skin (dermis) where cellular repair takes place.
What is collagen induction?
Collagen is the primary building block of smooth, tight, plump, healthy skin. However, collagen production declines significantly with age, leading to wrinkled, lined, and sagging skin. Collagen induction simply refers to the stimulation of new collagen production in the skin. PRP microneedling enhances this process by delivering concentrated growth factors from PRP directly into the skin through the micro-channels created by the needles. This promotes collagen production which leads to skin rejuvenation.
Is PRP microneedling painful?
Before your PRP microneedling procedure at Prosperity Health in Royal Oak, a numbing cream is applied to ensure your comfort during the procedure. While individual pain tolerance varies, most people only experience what is often described by patients as a slight pricking or tingling sensation.
Is PRP microneedling safe?
PRP microneedling is considered extremely safe when performed by a trained medical professional like Doctor Hakim. Since PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, the risk of allergic reactions or adverse side effects is minimal to none. Mild side effects, as with any cosmetic procedure, may include slight bruising, or temporary skin redness which usually resolves in a few hours.
Because the needle pricks are extremely tiny, the risk of infection is also extremely rare. Following your aftercare instructions will ensure that the micro-wounds heal rapidly without infection or complication.
Can individuals with darker skin undergo PRP microneedling?
Yes! Unlike many laser skin care treatments that are not safe for darker skin, PRP microneedling is generally safe for individuals off all skin types and tones – including dark skin. It is a versatile treatment that can address a variety of skin concerns in most different skin types.
However, as with any medical treatment, it is important to consult with a skilled provider like Dr. Nishath Hakim who can customize your PRP microneedling, and other aesthetic treatments, based on your individual needs and skin characteristics.
Is there anyone who can’t get PRP microneedling?
PRP microneedling is safe and well tolerated by most women and men – from teens to seniors. However, certain rare conditions, such as active skin infections, history of keloids or abnormal scarring, or blood clotting disorders, may contraindicate PRP microneedling. Dr. Hakim at Prosperity Health in Royal Oak will evaluate each individual patient’s skin and health to determine their suitability for PRP microneedling.
Is PRP microneedling a 100% natural treatment?
Yes, PRP microneedling is considered a 100% natural treatment option since it utilizes the body’s own growth factors from the patient’s own blood. It does not involve the use of synthetic substances or chemicals.
How many PRP microneedling sessions are needed for optimal results?
The number of sessions required may vary depending on individual needs, the extent of the skin issues, and desired results. Typically, patients see results after a single PRP microneedling treatment. However, for patients with deeper lines or scars, or darker unwanted pigmentation, a series of three to six treatments spaced four to six weeks apart is recommended to achieve optimal results. Maintenance sessions may also be advised to sustain the benefits.
How long does it take to see PRP microneedling results?
Results may vary, but many individuals start noticing improvements in their skin texture and tone within a few weeks after the initial PRP microneedling treatment. Collagen remodeling and continued skin improvement will continue to occur over several months as new collagen is produced.
Can PRP microneedling be combined with other treatments?
Absolutely, PRP microneedling can be combined with other aesthetic treatments – including Botox and Juvéderm – for spectacular cosmetic results. Combining treatments can be discussed with Dr. Hakim, based on your individual goals and skin condition.
Is there any downtime or recovery period with PRP microneedling?
There is typically no actual downtime associated with PRP microneedling. However, immediately after the procedure, the treated area may appear mildly red and/or slightly swollen, similar to a sunburn. This usually subsides within hours – or a day or two, at most.
However, there is no restriction on activities immediately following PRP microneedling – other than avoiding excessive sun exposure, using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, waiting at least 6 hours to wash the face, and waiting 24 to 48 hours to apply makeup. Additionally, patients should not exfoliate chemically or physically for at least a week after PRP microneedling.
Specific aftercare instructions will be given to you, which generally involve gentle cleansing and moisturizing of the treated area.
